Synopsis

When Jade is given a scholarship to an elite private college in Connecticut, she sees it as a chance to finally escape her painful past and get a fresh start. She’s determined to succeed and that means keeping her focus on school and not guys. But her plan falls apart her first day on campus when Garret, a rich prep school boy with swimmer abs and a perfect smile, offers to help her move in.

Jade tries to push him away, but she can’t deny her attraction to him and Garret won’t let her. Things quickly heat up between them, but then come to a sudden halt when reality hits and Jade realizes that a relationship with Garret may never be possible. He comes from a world of wealth where there are rules, including rules about who he can date. And not following those rules has consequences.

As the two of them try to overcome the obstacles working to keep them apart, Jade is confronted with another challenge. On her 19th birthday, she receives a letter that her now deceased mother wrote years ago. In it are revelations that explain her traumatic childhood but also make her question the past she’s been running from.

**Excerpt**

As soon as I start running, I feel the calmness I was craving. I get lost in the repetition of my movement around the oval track and I lose all sense of time. After a while the sun is really hot and I realize that it’s probably way past noon. I take a break and sit at the side of the track, completely soaked in sweat.

“Have a good run?”

I turn to see Garret walking toward me in navy athletic shorts and a gray t-shirt. It looks like he’s been running, too, although he’s not nearly as sweaty as me.

“It was all right,” I say. “I don’t usually run on a track.”

“You should’ve come with me. I ran a couple miles around campus.”

I shake my head, sweat dripping off me like a wet dog. “That’s not far enough. I usually run 8 or 9 miles.”

He sits down next to me. As in right next to me. Can he not see how sweaty I am? I’m sure he can smell me from 10 feet away. I can’t even stand the smell of myself.

“Eight or 9 miles? You must be a serious runner. I’m a swimmer. I only run to improve my cardio for the pool. I do a couple miles at a normal pace and then I do sprints on the track.”

So that’s why he has that body. He’s a swimmer. That explains the broad shoulders and narrow waist V shape he’s got going on.

“Go ahead.” I point to the empty track. “It’s all yours.”

“Why don’t you do them with me?” he asks in a challenging tone. “Let’s race.”

I never turn down a challenge. Well, sometimes I do, but it’s rare. “I’m a distance runner, not a sprinter. But a distance runner can beat a swimmer any day. This should be easy.” I stand up, stretching my legs which are stiffening up after my short break.

“You think you can beat me, huh?” He stretches as well. “So what’s with the insults? You don’t like swimmers?”

I shrug. “Swimmers are okay. I just don’t think they have to work that hard. I mean, the water makes you basically weightless. It’s easy to go fast when you don’t have to drag your body weight around. You don’t get that benefit with running.”

His jaw basically drops to the ground. I’ve just insulted both him and something that’s near and dear to his heart. Apparently this has never happened to him before. Pretty boy must be used to only getting compliments.

“Are you shitting me? Did you just say swimmers don’t work hard?”

“Yeah, why?” For some reason, I’m really loving insulting this guy.

“Game on, Iowa girl. Get your ass in position.”

He sets himself up in lane one of the track. I take my sweet time walking over to lane two, yawning just for added effect.

“Do you need a head start?” I ask him, stretching my arms behind my back.

“Damn, you’re annoying.” He smiles when he says it. “We do one lap around. Ready? Three, two, one. Go!”

I take off down the lane, my eyes straight ahead pretending he’s not there. I quickly round the first end of the track and hit the straightaway. I imagine myself running far away from that place. Running back home and seeing Frank and Ryan again. I round the next end and keep running.

“Stop! We’re done!” I hear Garret’s voice and slow down, noticing that I’m already halfway through a second time around the track. I finish the loop and meet up with him again. He’s bent over, hands on his knees trying to catch his breath.

“Okay, I admit it. You’re fast,” he says, panting as sweat drips off his face.

“Fast? That was my normal pace.”

He glances up at me, trying to figure out if I’m kidding. Then he stands up straight and wipes the sweat off his forehead. “Remind me never to do that again.” He walks over to the edge of the track and gets his water bottle. “You should sign up for cross country or track. You’re really fast.”

“Nah. I ran cross country in high school. Now I just run when I’m stressed.” It’s true, but I wish I hadn’t said it. It makes me sound weak and I hate sounding weak, especially around a guy.

“He wants her thrown in the dumpster.” I grimaced as I approached the mattress. “Help me.” I gestured towards the body. “I can’t carry her on my own.” Even if I could, I wasn’t doing this alone.

“I’m not throwing her away like garbage!” Lisa crossed her arms. “Think of something else, Jacqueline.”

“We could grab some wood, wrap her body, and burn her.” I glanced around the small bedroom. It was mostly empty, except for the dresser against the wall. There were no trinkets, no signs of another life outside of Genesis. I couldn’t help but wonder if anyone missed her from back home.

“How are we going to do that without getting caught?” Lisa asked.

“I don’t know. Craynor will know we did it.” We were the ones that were told to throw the body away.

“We could find a place in the far end of the lot and bury her.”

Lisa frowned. “No, I like the idea of burning her body. We’d be making a statement. Anita would have approved.”

“If we get caught, we’ll be killed,” I reminded her. So much for staying out of trouble.

“He’s killing his servants. You don’t think that demands attention?” Lisa huffed. “I would have liked to know what I was getting involved in before I worked here.”

“It wasn’t like you had a choice.” I reminded her bitterly. That was what we were fighting for: our freedom to make choices. Whether they were right or wrong, they were our choices to make.

“Even so,” Lisa scoffed, “she deserves more than being thrown away like a piece of trash.”

Footsteps clomped through the hallway, just outside the door. “Well whatever we decide, we need to do it fast.”

Goodnight, Bonita.”

Goodnight, Ralph.” I smiled and walked to my apartment’s door and put the right key in the lock.

Wait! Who’s Ralph?”

I turned and regarded him. He looked confused. Gorgeous, delicious, but confused. I was so good at messing with Alpha boys. “Oh, gosh. I’m just an innocent Cheesehead.” I shrugged my shoulders, batted my eyes and pretended to swoon. “What do I know?”

Apparently more than I gave you credit for,” he said.

About time.” I opened the door to my place and stepped inside. “Thanks for—”

What do I get when I figure it out?” He stared at me. “I mean—when I figure out the Ralph reference I should at least win a prize or something for my efforts.”

You’re never going to figure it out.”

Don’t underestimate me.”

What kind of prize do you want?” I asked.

I want to kiss you,” he said.

A shiver zipped up and down my spine. I thought about it for a moment. Realized he’d never find the right answer. He’d also lose all interest in me the more he drove me. He thought I was exotic. I knew I was boring. So my reply was easy.

Yes, Alejandro,” I said. “Yes, you can kiss me if you figure it out.” I shut my door, leaned back against it and smiled.

Sophie: Two.

Alejandro: Zero.

But who was counting?

Review

Mattie and Sarah who have been best friends since 4th grade move to Sedona, Arizona. Mattie goes to the law firm where Sarah works for lunch where she first bumps into Jeremy Harkins. Sparks fly and soon enough they’re in love despite Sarah adamantly saying he’s wrong for her. Mattie goes away for a few days with work only to return to something totally unimaginable, utterly betrayed she packs up and moves without telling anyone.

Moving to Mercer Island was the best thing that could have happened to Mattie, she meets Cade who is totally hot and covered in tattoo’s, HELLO! They form a strong friendship and even hint at something more if Mattie can manage to get over her love for Jeremy. When things finally start to look up, her past suddenly appears and she’s confronted by whom she tried to escape from.

I thought the story-line to this novel was a great idea, what had me stumped though was the way it was written. I had to repeatedly go back and forth and re-read parts as the time frame kept changing, it was confusing and I had to keep checking the dates.

I liked how the story was told from three different point of views instead of just your usual one or two. (Mattie, Jeremy, Sarah)

Mattie was a doll and I can’t believe all she went through, I felt so sorry for her. Meeting Jeremy was great for her and they were happy, things were finally starting to look up until it all came crashing down.

Sarah was a great character although I didn’t like her at all! The way she kept everything under control and her planning were great to read, she got what she deserved in my opinion, hard right?

I totally loved Cade, it could be due to the fact he not only had tattoo’s but was also in a band, both of which I think are sexy. He totally turned Mattie’s life around and was a great friend, I dread to think what would have happened to her without him around.

Overall I liked ‘Intentional’ but couldn’t get into it completely due to all the date changes back and forth.

Excerpt

The penthouse loft on the fifteenth floor boasted an expansive view of the city by the bay. Her prime SOMA location afforded a view of the Museum of Modern Art and the Moscone Center. Though the hills in the mid part of the city rose to block her view of the sunset, she could still see by the time the reality sunk in red and orange staining the sky.

Okay, so she was a little behind on the lives of women she used to be so close to in college, they’d text each other good night across campus as part of an on-going joke between them.

“What did I think, that they’d all stop living forward just because I got a little distracted?”

She hadn’t realized she’d said it aloud until Kamakshi answered. “Of course not. And they all understood. You were building BetaHouse, working fourteenhour days when you weren’t traveling. You were doing it: living the dream we all

“But that’s what gets me, Kam. This is what we  all wanted to do? We all said biz before bros, cash before cocks. What happened to everyone? Seems like you and I are the only ones who remained true to that.”

Carmen, the outsider to the sisterhood, perhaps had the best perspective. “Miss Betters, that’s how life works. Sometimes you set out walking down a road thinking you’re going somewhere, and somewhere along the way something else grabs your attention.”

Rosalind inhaled deeply, gathering all her tension into a ball at the pit of her stomach, then convincing herself it was leaving her body as she pushed the breath out through pursed lips. The coping routine was one she’d been taught long ago as a child. “Right, Carmen. You’re absolutely right.” Then she turned to Kamakshi. The stark ivory of her own hand looked even more pale when laid atop her Indian friend’s latte tone. “At least we’re still in it together. I got BetaHouse, you have KeyTerra, and we’re going to rule the world, just like we planned, right? No relationships, just equity.”

As though Kamakshi had suddenly developed an intestinal bug, she cringed and squirmed. “Um, yeah.”

The nerves were back, and so was the sound of her own pulse pounding in her ears. “No, I am not that out of the loop! You, I know. We still have dinner once a week! Well, except these last few weeks, but leading up to the big meeting… Kamakshi, what happened? Did your funding fall through? Did you liquidate? Whatever it is, we can undo it. With the next phase of BetaHouse underway, we can get together and brainstorm like we used to do. We’ll find a way to fix it.”

“No, no, no! KeyTerra is fine. And both you and I know that your big contract is going to double your work load, not lighten it,” Kamakshi returned. “It’s… something else completely. This isn’t really the way I pictured telling you this. But…” Pushing her hand in to her pocket, Kamakshi withdrew a stone with that could choke a goat. It was only when she slipped the rock over her finger that Rosalind noticed there was a ring attached to it. “I’m engaged.”

One final thud of her heart, and Rosalind was through. There were only so many revelations a body could take before it had to reboot. Rosalind Betters rebooted, right onto the floor.

Review

Riviera Benson escapes an unhealthy relationship and moves away from Chicago to start a new life. She loves to paint and finds a great job, allowing her to paint multi million dollar homes, which is how she meets Shan.

I really enjoyed reading Tragically Flawed, I haven’t read any books by Hargrove before this but I’ll definitely be reading more in the future as I loved her writing style.

The story was great and I loved following how Riviera grew. She started out as a woman who didn’t feel safe in her own skin and was always scared to become a woman who is sure of herself and learns to trust.

Riviera is such a strong character. After all she’s been through you’d expect her to be broken, in a way she is but not to the point she can’t go on. She builds a life for herself and doesn’t give up. I really loved Riviera.

Shan was also a loveable character, he’s beautifully understanding, protective, handsome, rich and doesn’t take no bullshit. He has demons of his own which he learns to overcome with the help of Riviera. They are a great match and complement each other wonderfully.

There’s a depth to all of Hargrove’s characters that allows the reader to be sucked into the story, I fell in love with all the characters except for Marshall Sue and Jason of course as they’re little sh*ts!

Overall Tragically Flawed was a great story filled with treachery, abuse, love, hardship and trust. There’s also plenty of steamy sex scenes that leaves you panting and wanting to take cold shower or three.

About the Author

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what laptop out the window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called her boss and quit her job. Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again).

So began A. M. Hargrove’s career as a YA/NA and Adult Romance writer. Her books include the following: Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge and Kissing Fire (The Edge Series); The Guardians of Vesturon series (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, reEmergent and Beginnings); Dark Waltz and Tragically Flawed.

Other than being in love with writing about being in love, she loves chocolate, ice cream and coffee and is positive they should be added as part of the USDA food groups.

Synopsis

Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?” As a Searcher, whenever Addie is faced with a choice, she can look into the future and see both outcomes. It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with–her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.

In one potential future, Addie is adjusting to life outside the Compound as the new girl in a Norm high school where she meets Trevor, a cute, sensitive artist who understands her. In the other path, Addie is being pursued by the hottest guy in school–but she never wanted to be a quarterback’s girlfriend. When Addie’s father is asked to consult on a murder in the compound, she’s unwittingly drawn into a drawn into a dangerous game that threatens everything she holds dear. With love and loss in both lives, it all comes down to which reality she’s willing to live through…and who she can’t live without.

Review

Addie’s parents are getting a divorce and she’s given the choice as to who she wants to live with. She’s a clairvoyant, when given a choice she can search her future where she can see both outcomes and choose the path she wants. To decide who she wants to live with she searches six weeks ahead to see which path looks more promising.

Addie is a great character, she’s loyal, funny, intelligent, caring and to top it all off she loves books, especially paperbacks! I liked how she quoted books and her room at her mums with book pages and quotes decorated her walls, how awesome is that!

I loved how the book was told, rather than playing the six weeks after each other they were done parallel, one day in the Compound the next in the Norm world. It felt like I was reading two separate novels, an original idea on West’s part, genius.

Now for the love interests. In the paranormal world we have Duke Rivers, the hot quarterback who’s charming and cute; and in the Normal world there’s Trevor the would have been star but no longer due to a shoulder injury who’s funny, artistic, kind and a lot hotter in my opinion. Trevor was definitely my favourite, he just seemed so genuine (and maybe i loved his cowboy boots), whereas there was just something I didn’t like about Duke almost from the start.

Once Addie has searched the two outcomes I feel she made the right choice, It was the one I would have chosen but would have rather had the other one. It was a choice between dangerous or dangerous and lethal. There wasn’t really much of an option once they had played out. It just shows Addie is willing to put other people before herself which was great and totally in character.

Overall I really enjoyed reading ‘Pivot Point’ (West’s Debut) and look forward to reading more of her work.

Review

Stig is at the mating stage which happens every three years when Cora, his dead friends sister appears on his doorstep seeking help. She’s in trouble and Stig is the only person she has left. She’s had a crush on him for years and wants more. Stig is hiding something’s and she’s determined to find out what.

I love dragons, they’re one of my favourite paranormal creatures so I was excited when I seen this one on NetGalley, I just had to read it. With it being so short I didn’t expect much but I’m glad I read it as it was fun to read.

We only really touch base as there isn’t much that can be done in great detail so we don’t learn about their past but the air sizzles when they’re together and they haven’t done anything regarding their attraction to each other, until now.

Stig is torn when Cora appears as he doesn’t want her around during his mating phase but with her in trouble he wants to keep her close until things can be sorted. When Cara hears noises coming from the basement she asks Stig about it the morning after and he tells her the truth, he’s immortal, and also a Dragon. Yum yum… Cora is shocked but it also excites her, what happens to her is as much a surprise to Stig as it is to her and Cora reacts badly, running away instead of facing it together.

Dead Sexy Dragon was mostly filled with sex scenes, not that im complaining but I would have liked to know more about the feud between the Knights and dragons as it was vague, we only learned the cause and not much else.

A quick enjoyable read. Red Hot Dragon, Book 2 in the Dragon Heat Series comes out on October 1st, 2013…not long to wait, so until then.

**Excerpt**

While I wait for my driver, I sit on a step outside the school. I watch the kids go by. No one stops to say hello to me, and I’m starting to understand why. Then I see Kyle trudging out of the school, shaking his thick brown hair back from his brow. I decide to go talk to him. But he changes direction when he sees me approaching.
“Wait! Kyle? Is that your name? Kyle?”
He stops, but doesn’t turn around.
Undaunted, I run up from behind. “Listen, I just wanted to apologize for Duke in the cafeteria today.”
“Why? Can’t he take care of that himself?”
“I guess he can, but I don’t think manners are his strong point.”
Kyle squints at me, trying to read my expression, so I keep my eyes wide open. If he’s looking for dishonesty or cruelty, I’m determined he won’t find any there.
“I don’t get it,” he says skeptically. “Why would you apologize to me?”
I shrug. “Because it was wrong of him to be like that.”
“If you’re gonna apologize on behalf of Duke, you should apologize to Ben, not me.”
“Um…okay, I will.”
After a moment of quiet, Kyle says, “Okay. Thanks.” He sniffs and looks at the ground, obviously uncomfortable. “As long as we’re apologizing, I guess I owe you one, too.” He runs his fingers through his hair. “I’m sorry about yelling at you at the soup kitchen. That was you, right?”
I nod.
“So I guess it was my yelling that made you run into the street, wasn’t it?”
I nod again.
“Well, I’m really sorry. About all that. I had no idea.”
“Of course you didn’t. Don’t worry about it.” I look down the street, past Kyle, but I can’t see John and the car yet. I glance down at my nails, still torn and ratty from living homeless. “What were you doing there, anyway?” I ask.
He shrugs. “I volunteer there sometimes.”
“Oh.”
“My parents own a bakery nearby. I work there almost every afternoon. When we have day-old bread and stuff, I take it over to them.”
“You…Oh!” I suddenly recall the slice of bread I’d enjoyed just before Kyle yelled at me that day. Soft, homemade, and unforgetable. It brings a smile to my face. “Well, I know from personal experience that they really appreciate that. It’s very generous of you and your family.”
“It’s the least we can do.” He hesitates. “So you’d been eating there?”
“Yup. All week. With my friend Carol.”
“Carol? That older lady? I know her. She’s sweet. Helps a lot of the kids out. I guess she’s kind of a teacher for lost souls, huh?”
“You could say that,” I agree, remembering my wise friend fondly.
A dark car pulls up to the curb.
I smile with apology. “Sorry, but I have to go. That’s John, here to pick me up. So are we okay?”
“We?”
“Yeah. You and me.”
After a second, he returns my smile and holds out a hand. “Sure.”
I step closer so I can shake it, and while I’m there I purposefully inhale the smell Amber had so detested. She’s right. He smells like bread. Banana bread, I think. And cinnamon. Not unpleasant at all.
